Frequently Asked Questions
What is reflexology?
Reflexology is an alternative health modality that involves a focused pressure massage on the feet or hands. There are reflexes on the hands and feet that mirror the organs and glands of the entire body. Using a focused pressure on these reflexes helps to bring these organs and glands back into balance or homeostasis. Reflexology provides stimulation or relaxation to an under stimulated or over stressed organ.
How does it work?
There are different theories including acupuncture meridians, neural pathways and zone theory. A definitive theory has not been established but the successes speak for themselves. Accessing the reflexes on the feet or hands sends a message of relaxation or stimulation to the corresponding organ. The deep relaxation that results during a reflexology session activates the parasympathetic nervous system and activates a parasympathetic response. Being in a parasympathetic response promotes healing.
Can I use reflexology if I am seeing a physician?
Reflexology is not invasive and it is well tolerated by the majority of clients. However if you suffer from any illness you should always check with your physician prior to embarking on any new health regimen.
How long does a session last?
Generally, a foot reflexology session will last one hour and a hand reflexology session will last 45 minutes.
What happens if my feet are ticklish?
The pressure used in a reflexology session is not a ticklish pressure but a firm and focused one. Many clients who anticipate being ticklish are pleasantly surprised to find they can tolerate and enjoy a session. Hand reflexology is available for the extremely ticklish client or the client who suffers insecurities about their feet.
Is reflexology safe during pregnancy?
If your pregnancy has been complication free, reflexology can assist with the discomforts that develop as a result of the quick changes in the body. Generally any reproductive reflexes are avoided with a pregnant client and a session can be booked after the first trimester. Check with your physician prior to booking a session.
What is the difference between reflexology and massage?
There are elements of massage in reflexology but the inclusion of reflex hooking can be more aptly compared to a shiatsu treatment. Reflexology applies a very focused pressure to specific reflexes that correspond to body organs.
Who should not have reflexology?
Everyone can benefit from reflexology! Conditions that should be avoided include phlebitis, thrombosis or contagious foot conditions. If you are unsure check with your physician prior to booking a session.
